Classroom Practice 2
Research
Research is something really important in Information Literacy Lesson. By understanding research stages and being able to implement them in the real learning will help learners to be more critical and thinker. I also believe that each year level has its own strengths and weaknesses, level of understanding, and also enrichment. Based on those reasons I tried to limit the stage of difficulties based on students readiness. Every year students will move on one step of difficulties in setting or preparing their own research study.
Lower Grade - Guided Research
At this stage, students are promoted to research stages. They will choose their own study and the teacher will help them to set their finding. For the students with reading difficulties, set an explanation for them to be able to understand the content of the resource book so they still can follow the message. By having this, they will stay focus on the task and answer the questions/clues clearly, as they are shown on the gallery.
Middle Grade - Comprehensive Research (Single Resources)
At this stage, students are starting to have more independent learning to decide their topic. In finding stage they are going to answer the questions with single resource. This will make them stay focus on their finding. In comprehensive research, the main focus is relating the questions with the answers. Students must have ability to connect the questions and the answers, as seen on the gallery.
Comprehensive Research (Multiple Resources)
Combined with Reading Skills (Note Taking and Note Making)
At this stage students are not only working with questions and answers but they will be asked to set their own research in order to fulfill the criteria given. The first step will be the deciding stage, where they will choose a topic to be analyzed deeper. Then they will work with the topic and start to focus on their finding based on the criteria listed on the research guideline.
Case Study – PYP 6 Research
Research stage for PYP 6 Students will be more complex. They are given various topic and they are free to choose one of it. Then they will be expected to form their own finding. To make it simpler for the students the teacher will help them with general guideline. As seen below:
1. Title Page look at the example below)
2. Background Study (telling about what you are going to do/abstract)
3. Research Questions
4. Finding (answering the questions this is the 1st phase of answering question/copy and paste are allowed in this phase)
5. Report (summary of the finding) this will be the real research, you should reveal the answers based form your finding and reword it again in a form of paragraph consist of introduction, content and summary parts)
6. Bibliographies
Then they will set up their presentation in a form of digital booklet like the work samples of the students. There are many ways to conduct research with different abilities and level of understanding. However we as teachers should remember that year level, independence, and interactive approach will make the objectives better
