Note Taking Ideas
Before their trip to Jogja, PYP 6 students prepared themselves how to set up their finding into a valuable and understandable notes. Therefore we, teachers and students agreed that they will have journal to record all of their information during the excursion. We dicided to divide into Research Skills, focus on Observation tools (taught by Ms. Chan), Thinking skills, focus on Reflection tools (taught by Ms. Corry) and Research Skills, focus on Note Taking (actively listening to speakers, reading information at historical and cultural sites) (taught by Ms. Evi) In this matter Information Literacy took place in the learning process. Together with the teachers we taught the students how to record information from guest speakers, places, and images. One of the easiest strategy was by having Cornell notes. Students could record one certain place/activity easily with information such as title, headings/key points, questions, some explanation and evidences. Taking Notes for Constructing Meaning After they returned to school, students learned to find out about the element of civilization by having brainstorming. It started with their own, then in a group. At this session they needed to classify their definition as a group. After that they should add more information from the other groups to come up with one definition as a class definition. At this stage they learned to eliminate unimportant words and joined new words to construct new meaning. Fractured Tales As the culmination of the learning the students had to present their understanding toward the central idea by combining the whole learning process. During language lesson students learned about Myths, Legends and Tales, therefore they were challenged to present their notes by having a story from one famous fairy tales and change some part of it with Indonesian culture that they had learned. |
