The Journey to a Deeper Learning-Media Information Literacy Curriculum
On October 2013 once again I had the opportunity to share and learn new things from my colleagues around Indonesia in the National Conference of Librarianship and Information Literacy. It was a great chance to meet and expand knowledge. During three days we had discussion about the development of Information Literacy in Indonesia and how we were going to move on to the next level. Moreover the President of IASL and some board members of IASL also joined the conference to enrich our knowledge. They also gave us some bright points to make the education in Indonesia more meaningful and engaging for the learners through Information Literacy Programs. We had also been introduced to a new curriculum which launched by UNESCO about MIL curriculum for teachers(Media and Information Literacy).
Media Information Literacy is a new perspective for all librarians and teacher librarians around the world where we were taught not to be an information literate person but also being responsible person in using the information itself.
"Information Literacy emphasizes the importance of access to information and the evaluation and the
the ethical use of such information. On the other hand, Media Literacy emphasizes the ability to under
stand media functions, evaluate how those functions are performed and to rationally engage with media
for self-expression". (Wilson, Carolyn. et al. UNESCO, 2011)
The MIL curriculum will be my next step in the next following year where I need to work on at Sekolah Ciputra. It is a great chance to introduce this not only to the PYP teachers and students but it will be also important to MYP and DP community since they are using both and media more often than PYP community. My personal learning itself will be about how am I going to modify, develop and use this curriculum in line with the IB curriculum.
In this occasion I also had the opportunity to share my experience and finding for the last nine years as a teacher librarian in developing and implementing Information Literacy at Sekolah Ciputra. It was a great experience and opportunity for my personal learning and teaching growth to be in this forum.
