Maker Space - 3D Construction
Tunning In
In this unit of inquiry students develop their logic smart by extending their knowledge and ability about 3D shapes. Through the central idea students unpack the words and try to clarify their understanding about the unit that they are going to learn. During the Information Literacy collaboration students find the meaning of difficult words from the central idea in the dictionary. This activity gives them opportunity to understand their central idea clearly. After they write the words on their book they are asked to explain the central idea using their own understanding. The purpose of this activity is finding out whether or not they know what they are going to do in this unit. Then they continue by asking questions which will become their focus of study.
Finding Information
Then the learning continue with the story of Arthur Dorros "This Is My House". From this story the students get their first information about buildings, structures and designs. They recognise different homes through out the world and identify the differences and similarities. Moreover they use venn diagram to record the information that they find from their searching. They also open three different resources in internet about houses, buildings and construction.
Sorting Out
After they get all the information they start to find information about building beside houses. They can choose any famous building around the world and have small research about it. They need to find the information about its geographical aspect, sturdiness and materials to build the building.
Going Further
After they have the knowledge about how one building build then they start to think about their own building. They continue the learning by designing a draft of their own building by looking at the criteria as below
Making Connection
Then they will start the maker space activity by putting their imagination through the draft of their building into 3D construction. They may combine all the materials such as ice cream sticks, tooth picks, papers, clay, straws, and newspaper for their building. In this stage the creativity takes place. The students start to build their building with various ways.
Reflection
After they finish their project they make a reflection about the whole process of their learning. They are finding out their success and failure in order to lead them to answer the profiles and attitudes in this unit. They also explain about their strength and weakness in doing their task. then they also explain about the three concepts that they have learned in this unit(form, connection, perspective). They also need to look back again their draft and their end result do they find any similarities or differences.

- Where (think about the place to build that building)
- What (think about the problem which might occur in the process to build that building)
- Why (think about certain materials that you will use, what are the reasons to use those materials)
- How (think about the process to build it (sketch/draft picture)
